How can UAE businesses ensure employees receive the correct salary every month?
Payroll involves more than adding basic pay and allowances. Employers must also account for overtime, unpaid leave, applicable deductions and employment regulations.
Understanding how to calculate salary in UAE helps businesses maintain accurate payroll records, manage labour costs and meet their wage-payment obligations. This guide explains the essential salary components, calculation methods and practical examples to help employers, HR teams and employees understand the process.
We’ll also explore how Ripple Accountants can help your business manage employee salaries accurately and efficiently through its professional payroll services.
Let’s get started!
Accurate salary calculation is important for both employers and employees. A payroll error can result in underpayment, incorrect deductions, employee disputes and additional administrative work.
For businesses, reliable payroll calculations help with budgeting, cash-flow planning, accounting reconciliation and compliance with applicable employment requirements. Employers must also ensure that salary payments and supporting records follow the rules relevant to their establishment.
For employees, understanding a salary breakdown makes it easier to check whether contractual earnings, overtime payments and deductions have been calculated correctly.
Salary calculations can vary depending on the employment contract, working arrangements and applicable legislation. Therefore, businesses should establish a consistent payroll process rather than relying on one formula for every employee.

Before calculating an employee’s salary, identify the components specified in the employment contract.
Basic salary is the wage stated in the employment contract, excluding allowances and additional benefits. It is particularly important for certain statutory calculations, including overtime and end-of-service benefits.
Allowances are additional payments provided under the employment contract or company policy. Common examples include:
Gross salary generally includes the basic salary, applicable allowances and other earnings before deductions.
Net salary is the amount payable after applicable, lawful deductions and payroll adjustments.
Check the employee’s signed contract and current payroll records before performing any calculations.
Confirm the following:
Do not assume that basic salary must represent a fixed percentage of total compensation. Use the employee’s actual contractual terms and applicable legal requirements.
Add the employee’s basic salary and fixed allowances to establish the regular monthly salary.
Example:
| Salary component | Amount |
| Basic salary | AED 6,000 |
| Housing allowance | AED 2,000 |
| Transport allowance | AED 500 |
| Other fixed allowance | AED 500 |
| Total fixed monthly salary | AED 9,000 |
Calculation:
AED 6,000 + AED 2,000 + AED 500 + AED 500 = AED 9,000.
The employee’s fixed monthly salary is AED 9,000 before applicable deductions and variable earnings.
When an employee joins or leaves during a salary period, payroll teams must determine the amount payable for the relevant period.
An illustrative calculation using a 30-day divisor is:
Partial-Month Salary = Monthly Salary ÷ 30 × Payable Days
Example:
Partial-month salary = AED 300 × 12 = AED 3,600.
Confirm the applicable calculation method, salary period and payable days before using this formula in actual payroll.
Verify the employee’s attendance and approved leave records before making an unpaid-leave adjustment. Paid annual leave, sick leave and other protected leave must not automatically be treated as unpaid absence.
Where the applicable method uses a 30-day divisor:
Unpaid Leave Deduction = Monthly Salary ÷ 30 × Unpaid Days
Example:
Deduction = AED 300 × 2 = AED 600.
The salary remaining before other adjustments would be AED 8,400.
This is an illustrative example. Verify the appropriate calculation base and applicable employment rules for the employee’s circumstances.
Overtime calculations depend on the employee’s eligibility, working hours and applicable UAE labour legislation.
For eligible private-sector employees covered by the standard provisions of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, ordinary overtime generally attracts an additional payment of at least 25% of the normal hourly basic wage. Certain night-time overtime and rest-day situations are subject to different provisions.
Example:
Assume an employee has a monthly basic salary of AED 6,000, a normal working day of eight hours and five eligible overtime hours.
Calculate the hourly basic wage:
AED 6,000 ÷ 30 ÷ 8 = AED 25 per hour.
Calculate the illustrative overtime rate at 125%:
AED 25 × 1.25 = AED 31.25 per hour.
Calculate overtime pay:
AED 31.25 × 5 = AED 156.25.
The example illustrates ordinary overtime at the stated rate. Check the applicable legislation before calculating actual overtime payments.
For the legal basis, consult the official UAE Labour Law and MoHRE employee-rights guidance.
Once fixed salary and applicable additional earnings have been calculated, identify the lawful deductions and adjustments relevant to the employee.
These may include applicable pension or social-security contributions, unpaid-leave adjustments and other deductions permitted under the applicable legislation.
Example:
| Payroll item | Amount |
| Fixed monthly salary | AED 9,000 |
| Approved overtime | AED 156.25 |
| Unpaid-leave adjustment | −AED 600 |
| Other applicable deductions | AED 0 |
| Net payable before further adjustments | AED 8,556.25 |
Calculation:
AED 9,000 + AED 156.25 − AED 600 = AED 8,556.25.
This example assumes no additional deductions or contributions. Actual net pay must reflect the employee’s individual circumstances and applicable rules.
After completing the calculations, review the payroll register and supporting documents before authorising payment.
Refer to the UAE Government’s official salary-payment guidance for further information.
Even small payroll errors can create repeated corrections and employee disputes. Businesses should avoid these common problems:
A documented payroll checklist and independent review can help businesses reduce these risks.

No. Basic salary is the contractual wage component excluding allowances. Gross salary generally includes basic salary, allowances and other applicable earnings before deductions.
The UAE does not generally impose personal income tax on employment salaries. Applicable pension or social-security contributions and other lawful payroll adjustments may still affect take-home pay.
For eligible employees covered by the standard private-sector provisions, ordinary overtime generally includes the normal hourly basic wage plus an additional amount of at least 25%. Different provisions may apply to certain night-time hours, rest days and employee categories.
Employers covered by WPS requirements must follow the applicable salary-payment rules. Businesses should verify whether their establishment is covered and follow current MoHRE guidance.
Accurate salary calculation helps UAE businesses pay employees correctly, maintain reliable payroll records and meet applicable employment requirements. By reviewing salary components, overtime, leave adjustments and lawful deductions, employers can reduce payroll errors and improve financial management.
